SST in Rhapsody - Take Three

More colorful pieces of the SST Records puzzle keep getting plugged in to Rhapsody these days. Here's a sampler of the newest batch: a little more Minutemen and Black Flag along with some early fIREHOSE and Soundgarden.

Also of note, the Minutemen documentary We Jam Econo was released on DVD yesterday. It sounds enormously informative.

Down on the Commune Tuesday

We tend to focus on more historic schmaltz here at R&S. So here's a phenomenal specimen recently added to Rhapsody that's slightly less ancient, but by no means less histrionic.

Out To Lunch Friday Playlist

Today, one of the more flagrantly exuberant out to lunch Friday playlists we've had around here in quite a while. It's got a touch of a faux world music bent folding it together.

Of note, this Praxis track may very well be the reason the envelope filter was invented. The Heatseeker will make subwoofers everywhere rattle out from under the desk with glee.

Happy Friday, world.

Asa Brebner Twin Playlist

Asa Brebner, in addition to having one of my favorite names of any musician, has played guitar with Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, and on his own. Beyond his musical output, he's devoted much energy over the years to supporting the Boston-area rock scene and local musicians.

Two of Señor Brebner's solo albums slipped into Rhapsody last week, and here's my two favorite tracks. Two unique tongue-in-cheek portraits of Boston-area female fauna: shady rock chicks and Boston University girls.

Black Flag Part Two Friday

Another chunk fell off the old SST Records glacier and into Rhapsody very recently. There's nine more Black Flag releases Rhapvailable, including Six Pack, Slip It In, My War, In My Head, Loose Nut, Live '84, and Who's Got the 10 1/2?

A fine way to mark a Friday. I reckon a recitation of Family Man would be appropriate for Father's Day, but that album's already been covered. So I'll manually wish all the fathers a fine weekend. Cheers.

Spanish Flea Party Playlist

Today, we celebrate another monumental addition to Rhapsody: the original version of Spanish Flea. It turns out the whole album "Going Places" is fantastic, and this version of Walk, Don't Run in particular kicked this ass for a man. In another bit of bizarre trivia to this ordinary citizen, Herb Alpert is the "A" in "A&M Records." Go figure.

Apparently Spanish Flea was written by marimba man Julius Wechter, who also played with an outfit called the Baja Marimba Band. Let's see about getting some of their music into the machine there, Rhapsodists.

Lastly, to turn on the lights and drive everyone out of the party I've invited the incomparable flugelhorn of Chuck Mangione.

Happy Friday to one and all.

Ray Mason Rhapsody Blossom Playlist

Recently I've noted some of the fine regional rock that's been creeping into Rhapsody over the last month or two.

Well, no one personifies western Massachusetts rock more than Ray Mason. Solo, with his Ray Mason Band, and as a member of the Lonesome Brothers, Ray and his blue-green 1965 Silvertone guitar have been creating pop satisfaction consistently and prolificly for decades.

Here's a sampler of a playlist of my own favorites from the fistful of Ray Mason albums that have made their way into Rhapsody so far.

Got It Right
Castanets
Sid Fargus
When She Walks By
Sometimes In Love
It Takes A Lifetime

P.S. I just noticed the "Recently played in Rhapsody" link on drake's page yesterday, and promptly became a bit obsessed with the idea. I love this kind of raw satellite feed type of data, and have added my own warrantless wiretap link to the sidebar.

Luckily, with the year-plus of posts here at R&S I think I've firmly established that I've got no embarrassing musical secrets to keep. (When Judy Collins and Neil Diamond show up one someone else's list, though, the NSA may call in the goon squad!)

In Case of Rapture, This Blog Will Be Unmanned

I read this morning that some people believe today's date 6/6/6 could be cause for concern. A sign of the end times, and all that.

Well, I think y'all are giving significance to entirely the wrong signs. If we need any evidence that the end of the world is not quite nigh, how about the rounding out of the Funkadelic catalog in Rhapsody over the last week? Most of the early classics except Free Your Mind... are in there now.

And if I'm wrong, and the Rapture is indeed today, at least I'll have a fine soundtrack for it.

Cheap Suit Serenaders Take Two Playlist

There was a second album from R Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders added to Rhapsody recently. It's got a great mix of old-timey covers and well-crafted originals. Here's a sampler to rope you in.
