Yet Another Just Added Rhapsody Mountain

There was yet another overflowing, far-ranging, musically intriguing Just Added list in Rhapsody earlier this week. Hundreds of the albums are odd greatest hits and live recordings (of widely varying sound quality) from the mysterious Swiss entity named Carinco Ag. Also, a whole lot of soul, ska, and dub on the Charly record label.

Here's some early results of my sifting the latest batch. Highlights include a solid Yiddish classic from Connie Francis, a rare tale of hermaphrodite love from Count Lasher, and the Nova Scotia country croon of Hank Snow.

Ozma-Gluey Porch Treatments Sampler Playlist

We seldom let a Melvins addition to Rhapsody pass unnoticed, and today is no exception. One day last week the Boner Records release combining Ozma and Gluey Porch Treatments was added. With 10 Songs (represented in Rhapsody as the recompiled 26 Songs) and Bullhead, the early Melvins selection in Rhapsody is quite robust.

Here's a happy little sampler to mark the occasion.

A Live Phish Sequence Mas Fina

Not too crazy about the recent Live in Brooklyn release, here's what I think is the best live Phish sequence available in Rhapsody (recently re-added after being brutally deleted some time ago).

Second set of the opening show of the last, pseudo-homecoming weekend of a long Fall tour 1998. Band stoked for an outdoor New Year's run in Hawaii (thus the Wipeout and subsequent rampant teases) that would later be kiboshed by permit troubles before becoming a reality. A rare and feisty, if short, drum solo in Wipeout. They're playing loud, slightly messy rock with vintage breakneck segues eventually sublimating into a trio of early classics: Dog Log, Sanity, and Buffalo Bill.

This was also a golden age when Mike's bass was mixed crisply and prominently for all solar plexuses to enjoy and rattle in sympathy with. While never a card-carrying member of People for a Louder Mike, I had no complaints that night.

Did I maybe care a little too much about these things for a time? I freely admit I did, but it was quite a bit of fun along the way.

P.S. The Mike's > Hydrogen > Weekapaug sequence that follows this is also supoib, for anyone who cares to get that far.

Free Your Mind... Free At Last

The missing chunk of the early Funkadelic catalog was added to Rhapsody quite recently, namely Free Your Mind... (and the switching of the track Maggot Brain on Maggot Brain from pay-only to subscription-ready).

A week or more later, Funky Dollar Bill is the song that keeps jumping up in my mind in those scattered moments it's not filled with another song or actual human thought.

Byrd From West Virginia

Now here's something you don't see every day.

The country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. will be opening for Drunk Stuntmen at the Elevens in Northampton, MA tomorrow, July 14. They have some albums in Rhapsody, including a new release named California Country.

It's pretty straightforward stuffs, except for this very solid ode to West Virginia senator Robert C. Byrd. I love it. In the prelude to the current war, transcripts of Senator Byrd's speeches were some of the only signs of sanity emanating from Washington.

It just warms the ol' cockles to hear him acknowledged so well in verse.

Criminal Minded Just Added Sampler

There was a whole heap of fascinating stuffs on the Rhapsody Just Added list in the last day or so. While I sift through the rest, here's some of the best news: the addition of Criminal Minded, the 1987 debut full-length from Boogie Down Productions.

It's lean, mean, and full of South Bronx hip hop classics. I won't pretend to offer any historical insights on the subject but interestingly, through a miracle of pedestrian serendipity in the summer of 1991, BDP is the only show I've ever seen in Central Park.

Fresh for '86, suckas!

AWOL Friday Fresh Catch Playlist

I'm doing alot of work on a secondary partition these days, and the copy of Rhapsody over there refuses to synch up with the library from this side. So, I'm relegated to listening to whole albums or radio through the browser player. Such a state isn't quite conducive to regualr bloggerating.

Nevertheless, I have been noting some notable recent additions to the Rhapsody catalog and enjoying some seasonal classics.

Of note, Ovidi Montllor was one of those albums on the Just Added list you give a spin just for the curious name and album cover. He turns out to be a fascinating, if occasionally clunky, legendary proponent of Catalan music fused with a measured dose of arty psychedelia. Certainly worthy of investigation.
