Big Bamboo Tuesday

In the realm of ribald classics, Big Bamboo stands tall.

The definitive version of Big Bamboo currently available on Rhapsody is by Lord Creator. Information about Mister Creator is not abundant, but I was able to determine that he was born Kentrick Patrick in Trinidad.

All Rhapvailable Lord Creator tracks are spread across a dozen or so compilations. Here is a playlist consolidating the complete Lord Creator on Rhapsody.

Gustatory Fresh Catch Playlist

Not really a holiday theme here, but a little fresh catch for loading out and heading down the road to Turkeyville. I'll be A-Rhapsodic through the weekend, so cheers all!

Gustatory Fresh Catch Playlist

Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) - Icicle Works
Love Is In The Air - The Countdown Mix Masters
My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down - Ramones
You Better Move On - The Rolling Stones
Wishin' And Hopin' - Dusty Springfield

P.S. I just came across my new favorite Rhapsody typo. The Ramones Leave Home: Expanded and Remastered was added somewhat recently, and contains the forgotten gem "Carbonara Not Glue." This song might never have been kept off later versions of Leave Home if it had actually been about choosing Italian food as an alternative to huffing household chemicals.

I used to submit these oddities to the Rhapsody officials but even the severe ones (like entire albums containing the wrong tracks) have been completely ignored, so why bother?

Cheap Suit Serenaders Sampler

Consummate cartoonist R Crumb has a life-time love of old timey music that developed into a recording band in the mid-1970's. The Cheap Suit Serenaders have become less active since Monsieur Crumb moved to France, but various members of the band still gather for an annual show at the Freight & Salvage Coffee House in Berkeley, CA. Indeed, the next show is coming right up on January 15, 2006.

Earlier this summer their album Chasin' Rainbows (originally dubbed "Number Two") was added to Rhapsody. Here's an appetizing sampler.

Green Machine Fresh Catch Playlist

Our fire sale on songs heard mostly from the back seat driving around town thirty years ago rages on.

Green Machine Fresh Catch Playlist

Goin' Out Of My Head - Little Anthony and the Imperials
You Are The Woman - Firefall
You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates
Goin' Out Of My Head - Willie Bobo
Rivers Of Babylon - The Melodians

Gee whiz note: Rivers Of Babylon turns out to be a skanked up version of a biblical passage, Psalms 137. Interestingly, the song stops before the part about dashing babies heads against the rocks.

Not to get all intelligent design here, but are there other obvious examples of rocking hit versions of Bible passages aside from this and Turn, Turn, Turn?

Annotated Comment

The new Wilco double live release is being appreciated here at R&S Labs and around the land I'm sure. The one cover present is Comment, originally by Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band.

I hadn't come across the song before hearing a recording of Wilco closing last year's New Year's Eve show on a cautiously optimistic note with it (a night that included a slew of fun covers). I didn't think to hunt down the original until today. There may be a few others out there who haven't heard the original either. Some damn fine source material, for sure.

Here's a playlist that illustrates another of the many ways Rhapsody continues to surprise and delight this particular musical omnivore. Over the past few weeks there were a Hool of alot of albums added from the Arhoolie record label.

Amongst the mound of novel, delicious additions were several great early sides from Flaco Jimenez and Freddy Fender. A few highlights are in the playlist, along with some songs from Beto Villa Y Su Orquesta.

Brother Louie Monday

We had a canine house guest this weekend named Louie, so of course out of nowhere I quite promptly got this song stuck in my head. I found it on a compilation of B-grade 70's rock hits, and am throwing in a couple other forgotten gems from the same tainted vein.

Sabbatical Inaugural Fresh Catch Playlist

I'm enjoying a little sabbatical lounging on the far shores of Rhapsody, occasionally toying with some actual playlist research. I'll craft up a post card when I encounter something worth writing home about.
