Best of Ribaldry & Schmaltz 2006

Once again, here is a retrospective distillation of the twenty finest songs included in playlists here at Ribaldry & Schmaltz over the last year. I spent alot of time spelunking in the Rhapsody Just Added lists, so the playlist mirrors the finer oddity trends from Rhapsody in 2006: old rockabilly, small label soul, random international sounds, the Smithsonian-Folkways catalog, SST Records, the Carinco Ag/Charly Records assault, and some fine local music, among many, many other interesting additions.

Of course, 2006 also saw the digital loss of the Frank Zappa catalog, a tragedy many are still reeling from. We here at R&S also mourn the Rhapsody losses of the Naked Lunch soundtrack, Spanky & Our Gang's Greatest Hits, Sanctuary from the J Geils Band, Connie Francis Sings Jewish Favorites, the early Bee Gees output (especially Cucumber Castle), Coralie Clement's albums, and the odd switching off of ILBT's from the Joe Walsh Anthology. You will be missed, my friends.

May 2007 be as sonically fascinating. A Happy New Year to one and all!

Out To Lunch Friday Playlist - AM Holiday Edition

Today out to lunch, a rock solid trio of AM classics, perhaps heard from the back seat of grampa's 1974 Coupe de Ville on the way to that year's Christmas Eve party. A very merry one to one and all!

Slow Starter Tuesday Fresh Catch Playlist

Today a slow starting, dim morning fresh catch playlist. Of note, I was quite happily intrigued to find Stone Coyotes bandleader Barbara Keith's 1972 solo album in Rhapsody last week. Certainly a far cry from the way I'm used to hearing her today, and more interesting for it.

Trey Anastasio: Lawbreaker Playlist

Oh, who could predict that earnest Trey Anastasio would be today's Web portal news whipping boy? A new page in the inevitable coffee table book of fine notable mug shots, here's a playlist of appropriate songs for the occasion.

Good luck with everything, brother. Honestly, Brian and Robert cheered me up through a period of legal uncertainty. Give it a whirl.

America Drinks And Goes Home

Today out to lunch, we confusedly expose the national anthem of the United States of America as a rip-off of a nearly unlistenable British drinking song. Why was I never told?

Luiz Bonfa Solo in Rio 1959 Sampler

Here's a sampler from an album that kicked my ass earlier this week: Luiz Bonfa Solo in Rio 1959. It's part of the Smithsonian Folkways additions to Rhapsody this year, and features the bossa nova pioneer alone with his guitar.

Unadorned, but not at all raw. It's rich, smooth, and lively with occasional graceful vocals and constant inventive fretwork. Night and Day in particular includes some simultaneous bass line and soloing gymnastics that would tie most hands into a sheepshank knot.
