Threefer Thursday Rethought Thursday Playlist

Here's a first here at Ribaldry & Schmaltz: a brief playlist of songs I do not recommend you listen to, and yet I would feel remiss in not acknowledging their existence.

First, I have indeed gone on record claiming that one of the biggest holes in Rhapsody is the place where a Frank Sinatra version of 'Send In The Clowns' should be. Well, now such a creature is wandering free in Rhapsody, but it's an uninspired, particularly hypotensive live version from the Carinco Ag carpet-bombing. One of the four minutes are overtaken with Frank putting off having to sing the song.

Second, around the same time there was added to Rhapsody the song that made Divine a gold record holder in Holland: Shoot Your Shot.

At the end of the third track, from an album that sounds like a live audience recording from the United Kingdom, Divine answers the question "What does shit taste like?". Or does she?

Am I wrong?

Out To Lunch Friday Playlist

I spent quite a bit of yesterday soaking up the pioneering bleeps and bloops of the Perrey & Kingsley box set. Today out to lunch, we meet at Winchester Cathedral, then head right back to camp for bug juice with Perrey & Kingsley. Yes, it's another fine instrumental version of "Hello Mother", this time disguised behind the title "Countdown At 6".

In other news, this recently added Paul Desmond album of Simon & Garfunkel songs is well worth grooving out to in its entirety.

Out To Lunch Friday Playlist

Winchester Cathedral - The New Vaudeville Band
Coundown At 6 - Perrey & Kingsley
Sometimes When We Touch - Dan Hill
Remember Walkin' In The Sand - The Shangri-Las

Soulful Fresh Catch Wednesday Playlist

Today, a fresh catch of deep, soulful proportions: the early seventies Texas high school jazz band thunder soul of the Kashmere Stage Band, the classic Ethiopian jazz of Mahmoud Ahmed, some descendant toddler afrobeat from the Backyardigans, and a little peace and love in the ghetto from the first Black Uhuru album.

Way Upstate New York Classic Rock Radio Sampler

Last Friday out to lunch, we were on a road trip through the endless cornscapes of northern New York State to the shores of that greatest of lakes, Ontario. It was he perfect opportunity to savor the regional classic rock dialect.

For a radio format so static and pre-programmed, it's fascinating to hear the small but significant deviations that define a geographic gestalt.

Flirtin' With Disaster - Molly Hatchet
Burnin' For You - Blue Oyster Cult
Double Vision - Foreigner
Hair Of The Dog - Nazareth

Sebadoh III Just Added Sampler Playlist

I'm no indie rock scholar, but I like me some Sebadoh III. It looks like this album was just remastered, re-released, and added to Rhapsody to mark its 15th anniversary. It includes a second disc of goodies of varying allure, represented here by Gimmie Indie Rock and the oddball Showtape '91.

Of note, As The World Dies The Eyes Of God Grow Bigger is one of my favorite finely-realized modern rock epics, in ranks with Ween's Buenos Tardes Amigo and Beck's Satan Gave Me A Taco. Who has some more examples?

Bobby Short - Official R&S Poster Boy Playlist

I think it's time we crown Bobby Short the official poster boy of Ribaldry & Schmaltz. No one has a tone and delivery that embodies our core values more completely.

50 by Bobby Short was one of the albums in the recent tsunami of additions in Rhapsody. Here's a distilled sampler of that relevatory document.
