Trailer Life Sampler Playlist

Last week Rhapsody's alphabetical long march through records on CDBaby brought the 2005 release Trailer Life from Drunk Stuntmen into Rhapsody. There were only two songs live on Monday, but by the beginning of this week the full tracklist had become Rhapvailable. With their twin-guitar alt country assault, the Stuntmen are Schmaltzy Junior's favorite live act, having just attended her fourth annual Cape Summer Family show at three years old and some change.

For today's Friday sampler, first we'll take T Flood's ode to the Blood of Christ. Next, Steve's ode to Bolinas, California, tricked out with horns and an electric piano/guitar interlude whose spacious minimalism makes me smile a little wider every time. Last, it's the band's memorial tribute cover of the late Florabama Bard Rusty McHugh's Bus Back To Birmingham.

Lady Ribaldry's Summer Schmaltz All Stars

Today our first playlist inspired by the Rhapsody genius of Lady Ribaldry. Her crowning achievement since getting her new Baby Sansa is a colossal, vein-melting summer playlist of easy listening and lite rock. Folkways Return of the Rarebit Fiend Playlist

I've playlisted songs that came up in dreams before, but here's the tale of the first time I was actually listening to Rhapsody in a dream.

So I was rolling through the Rhapsody, listening to this and that, and suddenly pulled up a record of songs of homeless people during World War II begging for hot dogs in New York City, filed under artist name "Homeless". Apparently this was a distinct musical movement, documented on record. For a bonus WTF factor, the album cover featured a picture of Jason Robards.

Certainly this had to be inspired in part by yesterday's Kobayashi controversy [NY Times], spending too much time with the flotsam of the Folkways Records catalog, and going to sleep after eating blueberry pie, lobster, a Caramel Cone Sundae, and Geary's Hampshire Special Ale.

I couldn't really even stand Bruce Springsteen as a kid in the seventies (I didn't have the patience for anything more subtle than KISS and AC/DC), but have been converted rather recently by a handful of vintage live shows.

Really unparalleled for transporting you to your own summer night below the sea wall, slowly brushing sand off of her sunburned midriff with the back of your hand, the sound of seagulls fighting over a french fry for a soundtrack. Good stuff.

Here's an emblematic triumvirate of songs from the Hammersmith Odeon '75 record to set the mood today, from Old Orchard Beach right down to the Redneck Riviera.
